Girdling Tree Roots

Roots are literally the foundation of a tree. Roots serve a multitude of functions for a tree. They anchor the tree to the ground, absorb water and minerals, and tree roots also take in gasses from the atmosphere. One issue that can occur with tree roots is girdling roots. This happens when roots do not grow outward but instead grow around each other as well as the around the root collar of the tree.

When girdling roots grow around the base of a tree they become tight over time restricting the flow of water and glucose. This will prevent the upper portion of the tree from receiving water and prevent the roots from getting food from the leaves. This can lead to the decline of the tree over time.

This problem can sometimes be seen without digging but often times it is completely underground and the dirt has to be removed to diagnose the problem. root collar

Root Collar Excavation

To diagnose and correct girdling roots the dirt must be removed from around the root so that an arborist can see them and make the proper cuts.

This process is very specialized because tree roots are very sensitive and easy to damage. Simply digging the dirt away from the roots is highly discouraged because it is very easy to hit the roots and damage them with steel tools. This project if done improperly can lead to the decline of the tree and leave it in worse condition than it was with the girdling roots.

Arborists use a special air tool to carefully blow the dirt away from the roots. They use a large air compressor with a specialized air tool. In this way the dirt can be removed while leaving the roots unharmed. Then the arborist can see what is going on and make the necessary pruning cuts to the roots to alleviate the tree from girdling.
